By the people for the people

Even politicians must do it. Deliver the best service and adopt the very basics of customer service, the very least.

Okay, so the Malaysian 12th General Elections are over. The results are out and we know who won and who got the boot. I am not here to debate on that; although I must say that now with more voices in the opposition, I hope for better check and balance in the administration of the country.

What I do want to touch on are the few reasons given for the major losses suffered by the ruling party. Mind you, these are not my hearsay – these are what I got from reports in major newspapers, watching analysts discuss this on talk shows and television interviews of veteran politicians, The Tun included.

Service, or rather the lack of it, from elected representatives. From the man in the street, it appears that their elected reps only make an appearance about a week before an election and the day after. From then on, most would have forgotten how this person looked like for lack of contact with him/her.

People-friendly and approachable are the 2 criteria cited as important must-haves of elected reps. So said Tan Sri Mohamad Rahmat, a veteran politician, and he never stop reminding his son who was elected for the 2nd time, of this. Ironically, this is also what The Tun replied, asked what his advice was to his son, when it was made known that Mukhriz was vying for a seat in parliament.

And it would appear that the lack of these traits in past elected reps cost them their seats. For when you decided that you don’t need to be service oriented and approachable anymore, the people concluded that you have become too big for your shoes. Then they too, decided that they don’t need you anymore.

Goes to show that what goes around, comes around.
